Influential creative midfielder whose £700,000 move from Tottenham
Hotspur in February 1996 smashed Reading's transfer record. An
FA School of Excellence graduate, he skippered England Under 18s
to victory in the 1993 UEFA Championships, his penalty beating
Turkey in the final. Made his Premiership debut in January 1994,
but couldn't command a first team place. Found himself in and
out of the Reading side during 1996-97, but scored a superb
acrobatic volley in the 3-1 FA Cup victory over Southampton.
He had a delayed start to last season due to a broken leg.
Once fit he was a regular choice before and after the arrival
of manager Tommy Burns, and is now one of the most important
players in the team, becoming an increasingly more prolific
goalscorer.
