To get the best from your coax

To get the best results from coax, you must ground the shield very well, preferably at at least two points.
Don't run a wire from the coax shield to ground: run the coax past your ground electrode (stake or water pipe), and connect the shield *right there*. Grounding "short circuits" common mode EMI currents, keeping them away from your antenna.
Burying the cable also helps to block the common mode.

Do this well enough, and even an unbalanced antenna will yield low noise results.
