Friends,

Just returned from busness trip to Poznan/Poland, Martin Elbe is continuing to Paris for his vacation. Now, he DOES do some DX these days, but mostly MW. Martin writes "sorry, no SW-tips, but perhaps you allow an old sinner to offer this MW-log I made this morning? :-) Have sent the tip also to Hard-Core-DX. This morning I was scanning the mediumwave and found an English speaking station on 864 kHz, carrying an Oldie-format. 0445 hrs there was a promo for a programme "Soundtrack of the 60ies", then into non-stop Oldies. At 0451 UTC France signed on out of the blue, spoiling the fun. Now I know, why this station is called Radio Bleu :-) I think, that this programme came via the same transmitter I've heard on 31. Aug. IDing as Radio 8-6-4, Voice of Evangelism. This station was inaudible afterwards, perhaps they decided to change programme format? Anybody with more infos?

And no, Martin, no MW here! Despite that, have the best of holidays!

As usual too many highlights to mention them here, so grab your specs and continue. Please try to keep the format when you send in contributions: Frequency -comma- Station -semicolon- location -comma- date(Month-Date) -comma- time in UTC without dots -comma- then you can write whatever way you want, ending with your last name in brackets, hi. So now a live example:

15521.2, R Bangladesh; Dhaka, Sep 14, 1504-1515, Male and female speaker in Bengali, musical interludes. Bangladesh mentioned. 34433 (Veldhuis)

This would help Ye old Editor quite a bit! You have to re-edit a few tips - I have to go THROUGH THEM ALL … not that it isnt great fun, it is.

CHINA

3280.00, Voice of Pujiang; Shanghai, Sep 6, 1040-1045, in Chinese with Radio Drama, 44334, (Kecskes)

A powerful transmitter for the external broadcasts of China Radio International came into use at the transmission station in Urumqi in Xinjiang 29th August. This shows that China now ranks among the industrially advanced countries in the world which have a powerful, world-class transmitter for overseas broadcasts. The transmitter will greatly improve the reception of CRI's overseas broadcasts.

While CRI ranks among the world's top three in terms of the number of languages it uses and the number of hours it broadcasts, its total transmission power lags quite far behind. With the approval of the State Council [words indistinct] a powerful transmitter was built in Xinjiang. When other transmitters come into use together with this one, China's transmission capacity for its overseas broadcasts will rank among the top three in the world. (Central People's Broadcasting Station, Beijing, 30 Aug via BBCM)

6063, Colmundo, Sep 7, 0540-0615, with a religious programme. The signal was weak but partly clear - Radio Sweden is off at that time on Sundays (possibly also on Saturdays??)! On weekdays the frequency usually suffers from bad interference by Radio Sweden. (Buschau)

As it happens, he is the bishop of Sonsón and Rionegro diocese in Antioquia. On Sept 7, brief mention for church attendants that a "community broadcaster" has been purchased; a down payment of 50% has been made, said the priest. If a harmonic, fundamental would be 1550, which is a fqy many Antioquian parrish broadcasters use. Signal strength is fair-to-good, and I can attest to the fact that they go on the air and leave the air without any stn identification whatsoever. (Klemetz/DatelineBogota)

ITALY

AWR Forli special programme - new time. Comments are letter to Hauser:

I appreciate your comment regarding the usage of 7240 kHz for a special broadcast from AWR-Forli and of course, your observation is accurate. However, we are in a difficult situation regarding these special broadcasts from AWR-Forli. In choosing a frequency, we have looked at many options, including another band altogether. However, somewhere in the range of 7 MHz is most satisfactory for propagation reasons and also because of technical limitations at the station. AWR-Forli was originally established as an interim station with the intent that a much larger station would subsequently be erected in Italy and this new station, to be located at Argenta, is now in the active planning stages. Thus AWR-Forli does have technical limitations. As you are aware, the usual channels normally in use from AWR-Forli are in the 41 metre band. We are unable to locate a clear channel in the 41 metre band above 7300 kHz, and we are unable to go out of band. Thus, the only alternative is to choose a channel below 7300 kHz.

The purpose of these two special broadcasts from AWR-Forli is to give listeners in North America, and elsewhere as well, the opportunity to hear this station and for most listeners, it will be a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. We are not transgressing into the North American amateur band for the purpose of introducing a new broadcasting service with high power. Instead, it is a special DX broadcast with low power for the benefit of international shortwave monitors and DXers. It is simply a two night broadcast consisting of two hours on each occasion. Thus, AWR-Forli is seeking the goodwill of the amateur community for the purpose of presenting this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many listeners to hear an exotic low powered shortwave station, for which a very exotic QSL card will be issued.

I might also add that many of the AWR staff at locations in Europe, Latin America, Guam and the United States are themselves amateur radio operators who understand and appreciate the protocols associated with the privileges of transmitting on the amateur radio bands. It is also true, that many of the active radio personnel who DX the international shortwave bands and who would like to hear this station also hold an amateur radio license.

Yes, the actual time of the broadcasts has been changed and is different from that which was first announced. and again, the reason for this change is because of the high congestion of radio stations in the broadcasting bands. The correct schedule reads as follows:- UTC Sunday & Monday September 28 & 29 0300 - 0500 UTC 7240 kHz 2.5 kW Thank you for your interest in this matter, and best wishes again in your own broadcast activity,
Adrian M. Peterson, N9GWY.

The first two days progr was a relay of Lima pop music station "Once sesenta" (1160 kHz), slogan: "11-60, al rojo vivo", while on Aug 27 there was a downlink of Lima's RPP (R Programas del Perú), which is all news. Not heard recently, but as my best antenna has been downed by a flying kite, I wouldn't swear the stn is off the air. Reception was on the whole rather poor (Klemetz/ Dateline Bogota)

Exact spelling for town's name still not well defined, sounding phonetically as "Sangayau". Mic audio improved significantly, but rcpn is fair to fairly good. (Nigro)

7745.94, Station's name seems to be "Radio Cristal". On Sept. 10 from 0220 to s/off around 0327, w/better modulation level. Chained huaynos w/ short dedications by man each 3 or 4 themes. At 0302 he mentioned "...la gente que esta en compania de Radio Cristal...". Baffled mic audio. Mx agn and "...nos despedimos hasta el dia de manana". But no closing ID. QTH still unknown. (Nigro)

7746, I haven't had the chance of checking the new Peruvian in this fqy until Sept 11, 2330. Horacio A Nigro's believes the stn is called R Cristal. This is correct. The id tag - repeated over and over again - says "Cristal, la nueva radio, la radio más potente del Perú". Speaker avoids mentioning the QTH, but music is so local in flavour that I'd be surprised if this is anything else than a new pirate from the Huancabamba area in northern Peru. Reception was quite good by 2330, but started deteriorating one hour later. (Klemetz/ Dateline Bogota)

7746, R Cristal, Sep 13, 0043, heard warming up with chicha music. Ensuing s/on annc't, 0054, said "7745 kHz banda internacional de los 49 metros" and included a greeting from owners, who were mentioned as "familia García Gaona" (not García Arjona as first tent. reported; I'm pretty sure I've got it OK now). Stn location was given twice, and as often is the case, slurring and without particular emphasis. Only after cross-checking the tape with my "Almanaque del Perú" can I establish the QTH as "distrito de San Hilarión", in the province and "departamento" of San Martín. Per speaker, stn is still in a testing stage, but regular transmissions, also in the local morning, will start shortly. (Klemetz)

The Russian transmitter guys reminds us, that summer is over: Last Sunday (Sep. 7) some summer frequencies were already replaced by their winter counterparts. Tbilisskaya moved for Vo Russia German 1500-1900 from ex11980 to 7360 (and the feeder line has high-pitched audio about three years now...). Samara replaced ex9890 by 7390; 7400 now signs on at 1530 and carrys until 1700 various Vo Russia programming, from 1700 onwards Radio Maryja, which is on 12010 now until 1700 only. SLOVAKIA

Radio Slovakia International announces that they plan to close their shortwave station located at Velke Kostolany quite soon. They plan to transfer the programming from Velke Kostolany to the larger and higherpowered station located at Rimavska Sobota. No specific date has been announced for the closure of Velke Kostolany but conjecture would suggest that it could be at the end of this current broadcasting period in a few weeks time.

There are two transmitters at 100 kW located at Velke Kostolany, one of which was on the air a while back with programming from Adventist World Radio. This station was also in use by Radio Prague in the era before Czechoslovakia was divided into two nations.

At this stage, it is not known what impact this move will have on AWR programming from Rimavska Sobota. Currently, AWR has exclusive usage of transmitters RS09 & RS10 at Rimavaska Sobota and shared usage with Radio Slovakia International of transmitter RS08. Radio Slovakia has exclusive usage of transmitter RS07. Each of these units is rated at 250 kW. (Adrian Peterson)

KDP says puk shuts down two radio stations in northern Iraq: Sanandaj, Kurdestan prov., sept. 9, irna: The radio of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Tuesday announced that the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has shut down two radio stations in the town of Rania. the KDP radio added that the two stations were closed down for refusing to broadcast special programs prepared by PUK on the occasion of the first anniversary of Arbil occupation by joint Iraqi-Barezani forces. Ordered by Emad Ahmad, a member of PUK political bureau, the stations were shut down early this week, the radio added. The puk has so far shown no reaction to the KDP claims. (via Sennitt)

Reports from areas under the PUK [Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, led by Jalal Talabani] say that the PUK's eighth centre closed the local radios of the Islamic Union [Arabic: al-ittihad al-islami] and the Kurdistan Communist Party in Raniyah in implementation of an order by Imad Ahmad, member of the PUK Political Bureau, under the pretext that the two radios did not consent to broadcast the venomous PUK radio programme on 31st August. Hi DXing community,
after a nice weekend in the village of Marx with quite some DXing guests, I am again back working... Before going over to the newsdesk, let me say that the article in last weeks DX Window written by Wian Stienstra caught much of the mood at this camp. We had much time to talk as DXing conditions were not as good as they were the days before. We talked about our club, DSWCI, and the impact of the Internet on it, Frank Helmbold told us about his experiences at the DX camp in Doebriach, Austria, this summer, and we had a RDS (radio data system) specialist who taught us some technical details. Needless to say, we all had a lot of fun, and a new camp is already planned for next year. This will take place on the first weekend of September. But I think I have talked enough now... Let's start this weeks' roundtrip through the world of the Internet.

----------------------------

Let our first stop-over be in Slovenia. The Slovenian regional station Radio Koper-Capodistria is now on the Web. The URL for the English Home Page is http://www.irts.si/radio-kp/english.htm They also have an E-mail address: Radio.Koper@IRTS.SI This station is part of RTV Slovenija, but this site gives more complete information than is available on the main RTVS site. (AS)

---------------------------

From Slovenia, it's just a short flight to our next country. :-)

The FM station NAU FM in Papua New Guinea has got the URL http://www.datec.com.au/naufm/default.htm (TK)

---------------------------

Okay, I think it's nice in this region. Let's stay here. The Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) is an international, non-profit, non-governmental membership organization for providers and users of communications services, policy-makers, technologists, lawyers, scientists and academics. Its homepage is located at http://www.ptc.org/ (TK)

---------------------------

That's enough for the Pacific now. Let's go back... A huge list of links to radio stations can be found on a site in the Czech Republic: http://www.cpress.cz/duhove_stranky/swww/w_0036.htm The pages are listed as 'Rozhlas' in the contents...click on any of the hypertext subheadings to see more links than you will ever have time to check...it's particularly good for Eastern European stuff. (AS)

----------------------------

We now make a turn east on our roundtrip: Checking the IRIB Tehran link, as someone told me that the whole service was offline, I was completely astonished that the service was not offline, but that there is now a completely designed homepage available from the Iranian international broadcaster. The address to go to is http://195.146.33.10/ (TK)

----------------------------

And before we're back in our homes again, let's take a glance at a small European island.
Manx Radio 1386 kHz is online at the address http://www.manxradio.com/ There you can read about the 1996 listening survey ("The results of the station's 1996 Listening Survey showed Manx Radio maintaining its position as Britain's most listened to radio station per head of population." On that homepage, you'll find quite some jingles of the station. (TK)

----------------------------

Okay, that was kind of a long roundtrip. I think we're all tired from that tour, and can now easily turn off our computers and turn on the world band receiver to listen to some exotic station, while sitting in a nice armchair.

Goodbye for now, and until next week

Sincerely Yours,

Thorsten

DX Camp in Marx --- Insider's comments.

After Wian gave his first report in last DXW, there isn't that much left to say... On the dx camp last weekend I again saw how mixed the interests in the hobby are. We had guests from all over Northwestern Germany and from various clubs, the German clubs ADDX and AGDX, and DSWCI of course. And (oops) of course I should not forget Wian who came from beyond the borders...

Many of the guests had fun listening to the more common international broadcasters, while others tried listening to the more exotic stations. I really say "tried" because due to the "DXing weather" the latter ones just got some of the more common tropical band and medium wave stations. It was a pity because the surroundings of the camp are ideal for DXing. Some of the logs were already included in last DXW, others are included in this edition. I have also included some "international" stations, this may be of interest, too. Also, some of us took a glance into medium wave DXing. These are also included.

One of the highlights at the camp was a slide show of this summers' DX camp in Doebriach, Austria. Our member Frank Helmbold was one of the organisers there and presented us some insights into this camp. He showed some nice pictures from two tours that were made --- one into Italy and one into Slovenia. Another presentation was by Martin Schultz, who has programmed a programme to decode the RDS signal. He told us how the RDS system works and what information actually is coded into the FM signal.

One thing I found most interesting this camp was the TAS. Well, I have seen this the first time on this camp, and was very impressed. Willi Passmann brought his "Telescopic Antenna System" and built a 10 m high antenna on the grounds. Impressive, that the whole system came out of his small Volkswagen Golf car :-) By the way, Willi, this antenna system would be ideal for DXers not only because of its good receiving characteristics, but also because one can easily attach all the stations pennants he got to it.

Well, what to say last about this camp: First: For all you who attended-you made this camp unique, and I hope to see you in Marx again next year, in the first week of September. Second: I have to say "Thankyou to Jan Lueschen", my Oldenburg dx companion, who organised most of the camp and will be organising the next camp with me again.
(Thorsten Koch)

Logs provided by Martin Elbe (AOR 7030, 100 m LW, DX-One) - Logs were in last weeks' edition already Jan Lueschen Hans-Peter Themann (ICF-2001D, SW Loop), Peter Fildstedt (Standard C6500, 12 m LW, MW loop) Willi Passmann (Lowe HF 150 mod. with Yaesu FRT 7700 antenna tuner, TAS - Telescope Antenna System, consisting of: 10 m fiberglas telescope tower, dipole for 60/90 m inverted V; vertical quad antenna for 6-30 MHz)

ABOUT DX-WINDOW
####################

Contributions:
Submit to editor for the coming issue, mentioned in the introduction.

What to/how to contribute:
We are interested in real DX-loggings, full information on new or future stations, news like new times or frequencies, QSL- and station information on home service stations/"rare" DX-stations on shortwave only. In the ODDS AND ENDS section, selected comments, short articles of HOT character will be passed.

Our aim is to spread hot and up-to-date dx-information amongst our members. And to get to know each other better. Other loggings, articles of a non-outdating character, QSL-information etc. should be sent to ShortWaveNews as usual. The editor is free to "cut hard" and bring only the hottest items he receives.

These following rules apply:

The DX-Window will be sent via e-mail to those members of the Danish Shortwave Club International (DSWCI) who contribute regularly. If you find that you have been put "off the list" and miss the DX-Window, just send us your hottest contributions. Or find the "DX Window" a few days later on World Wide Web in the DSWCI section of the "Nordic Shortwave Center" on
http://swl.sds.se/

You will also find back issues on the web. All this is offered free of charge to any DX-er, but we expect that regular visitors to our WWW-page do so in the spirit of Shareware and join the DSWCI. You will then as a member receive our monthly bulletin SHORTWAVE NEWS which also contains a lot of other information of value for the active DX-er.

END OF DX-WINDOW
