Friends, I messed up. Again. Hermod draws my attention to the fact that I moved Radiodifusora Tropico to Peru in last issue saying "Hmm... I knew that the Peruvians would like a bit more of Ecuador, but the annexation of a large part of Bolivia is NEWS." At least this proves that SOMEONE reads the DX-Window. Sarcasm is always welcome in DX-Window, hi. There's loads of stuff, so let me leave the scene to YOU: ANGOLA Vorgan has been privatized. A (?group) of Angolan companies is now working
on Vorgan's status. As a matter of fact, the Posts and Telecommunications

(Nigro) 4201, If it is Radio Nacional from La Paz, it should be noted that this is *not* a government owned station, but rather a privately owned commercial station. Bolivia is unusual in that stations named "Radio Nacional" are privately-owned. Others that may be familiar to DXers are Radio Nacional de Huanuni, which is owned by a miners' union, and Radio Nacional in Cochabamba, which is commercial. Radio Nacional of La Paz did use shortwave many, many years ago, 4815 if I recall correctly. I logged them once, back around the early 1970s, I believe. I visited the station when I was in La Paz in 1985. I remember it being a very run-down place and that the facilities were filled with boxes and piles of papers everywhere to the extent that it was difficult to move around. I waited over an hour to talk to the manager, but he never got off the phone, so I never got my QSL. This was easily the least-professional station I ever visited in a LAm capital city. BTW, Bolivia's government-owned station is Radio Illimani, named after the huge mountain that overlooks La Paz. SOLOMON ISLANDS The chief engineer of the SIBC, Cornelius Rathamana, has expressed concern over the future operation of the national radio, due to its old equipment. Mr Rathamana says it has become very difficult to get spare parts for the more than 20-year-old transmitters, which he says are out of date. He says if the current transmitters are not replaced soon with local or outside assistance, the obsolete transmitters and other broadcast equipment could become unserviceable at any time. - The SIBC's general manager, James Kilua, says new mediumwave and shortwave transmitters and equipment is beyond the organization's financial capability. Concerns are being expressed by the officials as the SIBC celebrates 45 years of broadcasting in Solomon Islands. NIGERIA Following Ivan Grishin's tip last week, I taped and monitored carefully 5910 via Germany Sunday Sept 21 at 0100. Immediately following Radio Vilnius with no transmitter break and no detectable change in strength, Radio New Nigeria opened in English, subtitled Voice of the Nigerian Advocacy Group for Democracy and Human Rights. Then a 5-minute talk by a woman speaking what sounded like a Black American rather than Nigerian accent; some music; then "brief commentaries" introduced as in Efik at 0013, Yoruba at 0118. At 0124 wrapup in English, said cassettes and other promotional items could be ordered from P.O. Box 202, Boston, MA 02131, or E-mail nagdhr@aol.com. Gave a different E-mail address which I could not copy correctly for commentary on their programs; closed with "another Mo-Jo [?] production" (cf below, ed) and off at 0129* sharp. I have asked them for more info, such as whether they have other transmissions actually aimed at Nigeria. Later found E-mail response from Maureen Gold. She says this started June 12, 1997! (But apparently no one in the DX world noticed.) Sked is now To Af Sat 0600-0629 on 11995, NAm Sun 0100 on 5910, new freq from Sept 6, doesn't say what the old one was; and CEu Sun 1500-1529 on 6175, no sites specified but probably all Germany. She says their website will open within a week, http://www.nagdhr.com, and the other E-mail address is: radioNNig@aol.com (Hauser/WORLD OF RADIO 911) 11995, R New Nigeria, Sep 27, 0800, France off mid-sentence 0757 leaving the frequency in the clear. Out of the blue at 0800 came stn with "This is Radio New Nigeria" ID, speech in Vernacular. 0611 A song possibly called "Who will take a stand" praising Maureen Gold (who seems to be the one who answered Glenns e-mail in avobe item). 0618 Schedule and frequencies given 0625 another song, 0629 Final announcement "For comments for this broadcast .... other promotional items please write NAGDHR, P.O.Box 202, Boston-Mass 02131. Our ... e-mail address .nagdhr@aol.com.. Radio New Nigeria - the Voice of the Nigeria ... People for Democracy and Human Rights. Join us again next week at the same place - same time. Another Mo-Gold production." Off. Weak and splash. Wonder where this comes from, hard to believe 11995 is Julich. Weak, thin modulation. RNN answered back quickly, e.g. saying: "The location or source of airing is confidential for security reasons. We have a special Independence day broadcast coming out on Oct 1st - I shall also inform you of that within 48 hrs. Thanks once again, Maureen Gold" & Tune in for Regular Weekly Short-Wave radio broadcasts on events around the world on Nigeria, panel discussions, music from our album CD & commentaries in different dialects. "The combined rigour and journalistic quality of `Clarin'and the BBC are central to this Spanish-language news service via the internet. This event expands the field of freedom of the press and enriches the patrimony of our local culture," said Roberto Guareschi, editor in chief of `Clarin'. Tomorrow's debate, the first "Joint Argentine-British conference on freedom of information on the internet" , begins at 1800 gmt. On the panel in London will be Ricardo Kirshbaum, deputy editor of `Clarin', and `Financial Times' journalist Jimmy Burns, a former correspondent in Argentina and author of a book on Maradonna. In Buenos Aires will be award-winning journalist and host of a morning radio news programme, Nelson Castro; leading radio and television journalist Magdalena Ruiz Guinazu, who was a member of Conadep, the commission on "disappeared persons", set up after the fall of the military dictatorship; Roberto Guareschi, editor in chief of `Clarin', and Andrew Graham Yool, director of the `Buenos Aires Herald'. Net surfers around the world are invited to take part in the debate. Questions for the panel can be sent to `Clarin's home page and selected ones will be fed into the debate while it is being broadcast. Highlights of the debate are to be broadcast in "Enfoque" on Friday 26th September at 1215, repeated at 1715 and 2015 gmt and 0015 and 0315 on Saturday. HTV [Croatian Television] has been available on the Internet for a while now, and one can watch their programmes as well as listen to their radio station's first programme and Radio Rijeka. Belgrade's B92, whose survival was enabled by the Internet, is legendary. Although it has been possible to listen to Radio Ognjisce on the Internet, it cannot be found among the audio and video sites on the Internet. Radio Ognjisce says the reason is that their broadcasting is experimental. If they find a sponsor by the end of the month, they will start broadcasting on a regular basis. They have had good experiences broadcasting on the Internet, and Slovenes in some parts of the United States, where local telephone calls are practically free, listen to them regularly and maintain contact. The first Slovene medium present on the net was supposedly Radio Gama MM. The equipment required for broadcasting over the Internet is not free, and that is why internet broadcasting is not worth it for (our) commercial media. However, the quality of the sound - providing that the telephone connection is, on average, good - is better than with the use of mediumwave transmitters, which until recently were our only access to the airwaves. The software and the computer equipment supposedly cost RTV Slovenia around 25,000 dollars. This encouraging technological step was almost fully co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia Government Information Department, which is also responsible for informing Slovenes abroad. Other loggings, articles of a non-outdating character, QSL-information etc. should be sent to ShortWaveNews as usual. The editor is free to "cut hard" and bring only the hottest items he receives. These following rules apply: The DX-Window will be sent via e-mail to those members of the Danish
Shortwave Club International (DSWCI) who contribute regularly. If you find
that you have been put "off the list" and miss the DX-Window, just send
us your hottest contributions. Or find the "DX Window" a few days later
on World Wide Web in the DSWCI section of the "Nordic Shortwave Center"
on
You will also find back issues on the web. All this is offered free of charge to any DX-er, but we expect that regular visitors to our WWW-page do so in the spirit of Shareware and join the DSWCI. You will then as a member receive our monthly bulletin SHORTWAVE NEWS which also contains a lot of other information of value for the active DX-er. END OF DX-WINDOW |
