Friends, >I have been wondering about the continual decrease in 60mb Africans< says Ralph Famularo. >Does anyone know the status of such countries as Cameroon, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and more recently, the Central African Republic on 5033v -- are any of these guys planning to return? It's quite depressing to see one after another of the African nations disappearing from the bands. Is satellite a viable alternative in Africa? Will the average African be able to afford satellite receiving technology? It seems that someone with $$$ or technical know-how should be helping these nations with their communications infrastructure.< - What do You say, guys? What a pleasure to meet Arto Mujunen and Risto Vahakainu of Finland and EDXC again. Kaj Bredahl and I went for a bite with Arto on Friday evening (active LA DXers eat Mexican!), and we had some nice discussions, continued next evening at the local meeting at Anker Petersen's house where Risto joined as well! I myself (now it is 2130 Sunday eve) am in quiet chock after beautiful movie my wife Vivi and I just got back from. "Barbara" a love-story of the late 1800s shot in the beautiful and rough scenery of the Faroe Islands. The chock was that a large part was shot in and around the very house where my mother's best friend used to live and which house I visited back in 1956 when I was 11 years old - going on a bike through the rough hills. No way could I get lost though - there was only that one gravel road from one to the other end of the island. VERY lovely movie - but in mixed Faroese/Danish ... hi. Maybe another Danish Oscar winner ...? Now, onto radiostuff: Contributions from

`Diario de Noticias' has learnt that one of the UN Security Council's demands - that by 30th [September] UNITA's radio station Vorgan [Voice of the Resistance of the Black Cockerel] should be changed into a multiparty station, giving up its previous role as an intensive propaganda tool - has been made possible with the allocation of a frequency in Luanda. The new UNITA station will be called Wake Up Radio... The Phoenix Islands of Central Kiribati are hardly inhabited, but the Line Islands of Eastern Kiribati (i.e. Christmas, Fanning and Washington) have a population of about 5000. I guess the feeder might be picked up there for rebroadcast by a local station on Christmas Island, not yet listed in WRTH. Maybe some internet-fans could find out? Get cracking, fellahs, but dont get confused with Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean! (van Delft) Maarten further writes: The feeder is, I think, part of the remnants of the former Tarawa <-> Christmas Isl. pre-satellite radio-telephone circuit. The ITU has registered the following frequencies for use by the PTT from Tarawa to Christmas: 7460, 7470, 14500, 14802, 16433.6, and 17440. Registered from Christmas to Tarawa are: 7460, 7692.5, 10171.9, 16077.5 and 19216.5. I do not know if 9810/9825 is also registered, but I can find out through a friend of mine who has access to ITU info. By the way, can you imagine that a few thousand inhabitants of Eastern Kiribati would listen to a station in SSB? Therefore I think there is a broadcasting station on Christmas Island, not listed by the WRTH. Incidentally, it is a little strange and inconsistent that the WRTH mentions this feeder, but does not do the same under Saudi Arabia with the Call of Islam feeders, as well as the Argentinean ones beamed to Antarctica (van Delft) This is all I have in my archives, according to Monitoring Times of December 1992: "Since the shift to a 5-element Yagi antenna, Kiribati has upgraded from 250 to 500 watts of power. Shortwave is used in order to reach the Phoenix and Line Islands, which lie as far as two thousand miles to the east." (Vissers) Radio Kiribati data: PO Box 78

In addition to the use by the Foreign Language Service of the VOV, the station is used domestically 18 hours a day, as well as for programs for the Khmer ethnic group in the area, and a general program for people on the Mekong Delta (6 hours a day) (van Delft) ZAMBIA 3330, Christian Voice; Lusaka, Oct 4, 1715-1725, Religious songs in vernacular: ''Hallelujah!''. The schedule is 1230-1330 on 15405 and 17820 kHz, and 2230-2330 on 6015 and 7560. The US-funded RFA is now broadcasting in all seven of its originally planned languages: Mandarin, Tibetan, Korean, Burmese, Vietnamese, Lao and now Khmer. As part of a proposed expansion of US international broadcasting to China, RFA might also add Cantonese and Wu - the Shanghai dialect. (Communications World/VOA, 27 Sep via BBCM) CAMBODIA Cambodia's principal political leaders who fled during last July's coup d'etat are trying to operate a radio station to spread news about their resistance struggle. This radio station, whose programmes will concentrate on political and military developments, is to be set up in O Smach, the military base of the resistance. Gen Khan Savoeun, who is leading the battles from O Smach, stated that the Union of Cambodian Democrats [UCD] will personally run this radio station... The former commander of the Fourth Military Region of the Khmer Royal Armed Forces emphasized that resistance fighters need to set up this radio station because the 10 or more radio and television stations (both private and government-run) in Phnom Penh have now become an absolute tool of the coup-maker Hun Sen, who has commandeered these radio and television stations for his exclusive use and that of the Cambodian People's Party, and is making them broadcast false information. Savoeun said that the station will begin operation in November and the Cambodian people will then clearly see the true nature of Hun Sen's July coup d'etat. News about setting up this radio station has been known to [Information Minister] Ieng Muli, who warned: "I know about that (but) it is a clandestine radio. We will take every measure to silence it completely." The information minister, whose nomination as deputy prime minister was torpedoed last week, stressed: "Because these fighters are an illegal group, whatever they do is also illegal." ... good, and I listened carefully for any familiar words. I never heard "Radio"

Ethiopia, Somalia, Aydid and The Economist; the second half-hour was mostly
music, and the final announcement before closing at 0159, where one would
expect an ID, seemed to include the word "Somali". I've included a tape

Deadline: Fridays Hi fellow DXers, and again, a week is over. Really amazing, how time goes by. Today, October 3rd, is a public holiday here in Germany, and I hope to do some DXing this long weekend. So I now close the virtual "Caught In The Web" book and turn on my "real radio". :-) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Joseph A. Dentici, frequency manager of WEWN Shortwave Radio, Alabama, USA, tells us that the electronic mailing address for his station is wewn@msn.com. The address that is stated on their homepage, viewer@etwn.com, is only intended for the television audience. (TK) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Updating last weeks Israel item in Caught in the Web, Daniel Rosenzweig informed us that The free Reshet Bet URL has changed to http://bet.netvision.net.il. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ A mail from Swedish DXer Sven Ohlsson: There are mainly three different pages with information for Shortwave listeners. I have a "news" page with information. I don't concentrate on Hard Core DX. There are those doing that a lot better then me. But more information for programme listeners etc. I am also compiling a list of English language transmissions. This is the web version of a list I compile for Eter-Aktuellt published by the Swedish DX-Federation. I try to update the list as often as possible. And it also include direct links to the homepages of the stations. And I am also trying to put up links to pages with program schedules for the stations. This service is only in the beginning. The list is in Swedish (at least so far), but I think it is rather useful for English readers too. I am also putting up my monthly column in Eter-Aktuellt on Internet. This is also in Swedish, but hardly of much use for non-Swedish readers. The URL for the homepages (with links to the above mentioned pages) are below. I am planning to move the English language homepage to Algonet as most of my other material are there. http://www.algonet.se/~sohl/ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ RealAudio clips in French from international radio broadcasters can
be heard

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ The WWW address of the radio station of the Assemblies of Yahweh, WMLK, USA, has changed to: http://www.AssembliesofYahweh.com/log.htm. On that page, you find a frequency chart of the shortwave station, and the frequencies and times of their broadcasts via various other broadcasters. (TK) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Signing off this week... Sincerely Yours, Thorsten

I'm off on holiday tomorrow down to Plettenberg Bay, near a place called Knysna possibly on your map. So I won't be reporting for a week or so but the AOR is going with me so hope to do a little Dxing. (Norrie) ################## Our URL at Nordic SW Center Hermod Pedersen tells that he & wife will be away on vacation almost 3 weeks, starting yesterday, ahora para vacaciones, y casi nada mas. Acc to the plan ("and I DO have a plan this time" Hermod stresses) we will be landing in Lisbon, then go to Spain and finally end up in a small farm about 100 km North of Caceres (turismo rural), from where they will go south to Zafra and the parador there, i.e. Pizarro's old castle which is today a super hotel, untill they drift away towards Portugal and Sintra. We have been there before, but as a bit North of the town is a small village with one of the best goat.-restaurants in the Iberian peninsula, we simply HAVE TO visit again." 3 days in London will end the holidays. Plans remain in place to launch a functioning mini-Sputnik from Mir October 4--the 40th anniversary of the launching of Sputik 1 by the USSR. Sputnik 1 was the first manmade satellite put into orbit around Earth. Earlier this year, an agreement was signed between Russia and France to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik 1, and two groups of high school students cooperated in building the one-third scale model of the original Sputnik 1. Students in Russia built the satellite itself, while students in France built the 2-meter transmitter that will ''beep'' from space following its launch from Mir. The mini-satellite flew as cargo to Mir last month aboard a Progress rocket. According to Miles Mann, WF1F, of MIREX, the Mir crew will place the satellite in an airlock on Mir and push it out the door on October 4. Following launch, the scale model of Sputnik will remain close to the
Russian space station. It's estimated that its batteries will hold up for
up to two
The transmitter will put between 100 and 200 mW into a circularly polarized
antenna. The transmitter frequency is expected to be between 145.81 and
There, (and in Ham Radio Online, too) you can listen to the original
Sputnik
And this is the introductory text contained at
"For the 40th anniversary of the launching of SPOUTNIK-1 and the beginning
of the space Conquest, l'Aeroclub of France and Russian Astronautical Federation
are associated to commemorate this event. Last 20th February during a visio
conference they were God Fathers for the signature of the protocole of
action between the radioclub FR5KJ of Jules Reydellet College in St Denis-Reunion
Island and the Polytechnic Laboratory of Nalchik Kabardine Balkar Republique
The goal of the Project is to interest as many young people as possible in space matters, leading to an extraordinary realisation and maybe to get later a job in this field... The pupils from the two schools are working on a SPOUTNIK I miniature satellite which will be able to work in space, when it will be hand thrawn by a cosmonaut from the MIR orbital station. The Russians will build the satellite body in wich will be placed the transmitter made by the French pupils. It will emit a "bip, bip" on the 2 meters band 144 MHz, from October
the 4th
During one month, every VHF equiped amateur radio station in the world
will be able to receive the signal emited from the miniature satellite;
everybody will be able to listen to this signal with the use of a receiver
kit (presently in project). (Nigro)
