Nordic DX Championships 1997 (Nordx)
17-19 October 1997
hosted by DX-Listeners' Club of Norway
***Press release***

RADIO NORWAY INT:
FINAL FAREWELL FROM FREDRIKSTAD

***16.30-17.00 UTC - Saturday, 18 October 1997 - 11680 kHz***

A special, one-off broadcast in English from Radio Norway
International will mark the official closing down of the SW
transmitter at Fredrikstad on Saturday, 18 October.  This will
be the very last opportunity to hear and verify this site.  The
programme will contain glimpses from the history of the
Fredrikstad transmitter, along with other features
concerning  the shortwave medium and the hobby of DXing.

Radio Norway International and the SW facility at Fredrikstad in
South-Eastern Norway both came to life on 3 January 1948 when a
100 kW transmitter was inaugurated.  (Watch out for RNI's 50th
anniversary celebrations early in the new year!)    The current
500 kW Thomson transmitter (now radiating 350 kW) was installed
in 1976.   This
transmitter was closed on 1 January 1997, following the opening
of the new 500 kW facility at Sveio II.   Having remained
operational since, the Fredrikstad transmitter will now be
dismantled.

This special broadcast, which is beamed to Europe and North
America, is transmitted to coincide with the Nordic
DX-Championships (Nordx '97), organized by DX-Listeners' Club of
Norway.  Correct reception reports of this broadcast will be
rewarded with a special QSL-card  (details below).

VOICE OF AMERICA:
SPECIAL NORDX BROADCAST FROM GREENVILLE

***04.00-05.00 UTC - Sunday, 19 October 1997 - 5890 kHz***

The Voice of America have kindly offered to make a special
broadcast in English in connection with the Nordic DX
Championships on Sunday morning, 19 October.  This transmission
will only be aired over the Greenville transmitter, and a
special full-data QSL-card will be availiable (details below).

STAR RADIO, LIBERIA:
SPECIAL NORDX QSL-CARD

***19.50-20.10 UTC - Saturday, 18 October 1997 - 3400 or 5880
kHz***

Among the 23 stations which Nordx participants are invited to
listen out for, is the new SW station Star Radio in Liberia.  A
special QSL-card will be awarded for correct reception report of
the 19.50-20.10 UTC time segment included in the contest.   The
station will be broadcasting on either 3400 og 5880 kHz.

Star Radio is based in Monrovia, Liberia, where it has been
transmitting on on FM 104 since 15 July 1997.  Since 16
September, the station has also been broadcasting test
transmissions on shortwave with 10 kW.  During this test period,
the hours of transmission are usually 05.00-08.00 and
17.00-20.00 UTC and the station is alternating between 3400 and
5880 kHz.

Star Radio aims to provide an independent source of information
for Liberians living in the country and in neighboring regions.
It emphasizes the search for peace and the promotion of human
rights in Liberia.  Star Radio is staffed by Liberian
journalists, funded by USAID and managed by the non-govermental
organization "Fondation Hirondelle" based in Switzerland.   (For
further information, refer to their home page at:

Nordx is a contest to find the most skilful DXer in Norway,
Sweden, Denmark and Finland.  It attracts over 100 contestants
from these countries and the rest of Europe.  Contestants are
required to listen out for 23 stations at predetermined times
and frequencies, some of which are quite easy, others very
difficult.  Contestants are ranked according to a points system
which takes into account the number of stations they have
managed to hear and the difficulty of those stations, as well as
the quality of the logs they have submitted.  Nordx '97 is
staged between 17 and 19 October.

Further information about Nordx '97 may be obtained from the
address above or by referring to our web page:

MONGOLIA

Ludo writes about an interesting new SW tx to try for ina couple
of weeks time:

Hi Finn,

So far, the Mongolia project is running fine. The transmitter is
at this time on it's way to Saynshand in Mongolia. It was
shipped by airfreight from Central America via the Netherlands
to Beijing, and will travel by truck from Beijing to Saynshand.
It should arrive there around October 13. Installation will take
a week or two so on air tests may be expected by the end of
October.

The frequency they will be using is 4790 kHz. Power 2 kW.

Regarding the payment, the documents to release the last part of
the payment are on it's way, so we expect to have the money in a
few days. Thanks for helping us in this part of the job.

We receive quite a number of requests for shortwave transmitters
through the internet, so we are making offers in the evenings
(you have to know that my daily job at the company where I work
is also making offers the whole day, hi).

We have send a few e-mails to DXers near Mongolia to ask them to
monitor the frequency 4790 kHz in the near future. We have good
contacts with the transmitter manufacturer in Central America
but of course we are very interested in the results of this new
transmitter before making any new big deals with them.

How is your grandson doing ? Have you tought him already the
skills of DXing ?

Kind regards,

Ludo

Well, Ludo, my grandson is now already (today) 3 months old, but
right now he aspires more to the Royal Danish Opera ...

Now, boys, something there to try for these coming weeks! So
send your observations to me.   73's  Finn
