Friends,

We have a very extensive research on Bolivian stations from TIN. This is what he writes: "From September 12 to September 23, 1997, I managed a regular circuit of Bolivia, the highest and most isolated of the Latin American republics. It was short vacation, but was the 11th visit to Bolivia for me. The travelling route was made by land from Santa Cruz, Montero, Yapacani, Villa Tunari, Cochabamba, Oruro, to La Paz. Naturally I visited many local radio stations with the object of studying and investigating the broadcasting scene. The following list is the result of my monitoring research on the Bolivian shortwavers." - Thank you, TIN!

The DXW84XTRA edition mentioned interesting programs arranged by NorDX97. There is additional interesting item in this edition of DXW. Go find it! As well as loads of good stuff - how about Philippines? - or Cameroon? etc.

But also horrible news this time. A number of PNG stations with financial problems are have or are going to close down, cf. Papua New Guinea.

AFGHANISTAN

V of Sharia Kabul 1107 S on 1325 - 1630 in Pashto and Dari. Time
pips, opening anncts, recitations from the Holy book Koran followed by what
appeared to be a political sermon. Could not trace the listed SW broadcast
on 7200, either inactive or running low power. Listening for a while, noticed that all prgs were presented by male announcers. If I could remember, Taleban rulers banned women from working immediately after capturing power. (Weerakoon 12OCT UADX)

ALASKA/CZECH REP

In a note from Mike Osborne, English Host at KNLS, he writes in response to
a question from me 'Yes, we have considered a European site. Not long ago i
visited a facility in the Czech Republic, but everything associated with
ministry moves very slowly.' (Rommerts)

ANGOLA

4950, R. Nacional de Angola, Mulenvos; Oct. 8, 2000-2025, Portuguese. Male with I/D. Phil Collins - "She called out to the man in the street", Angolan political affairs. 43232 //1088//3375//7245 - latter heavy QRM. (Clemitson)

5985, Vorgan,  ?, Oct. 10, 2015-2040, Portuguese. Pleasant Portuguese ballards.  Male with lively announcements of a political nature in which "Unita" very prominent. At times listening to voice audio made difficult due to an annoying "echo". (Vibraphone?). 44343. Nothing heard on 7090 (Clemitson) cf DXW84, ed.

ARGENTINA

8098.00-USB, Radio Continental; Buenos Aires, Oct 10, 0620-0900, fair signal. Oldies mx px "Algo para Recordar". Every 30 minutes, the news flash "Informa
tivo Continental" was heard.(TIN)

8098.00-USB, Cadena Cien, Oct 11, 0730-1015*, is undoubtedly a new entry on this shortwave feeder. Fair but sometimes mixing with another Argentine station on USB which identified itself as "Radio Antena ... La Favorita". EE romantic vocals and YL DJ. The shortwave relay was suddenly closed at 1015 as usual. At 0841 canned ID was announced as "102.7 (ciento dos punto siete) Cadena Cien Rosario", so I presume that the station is in Rosario. But after then at 0918 another Canned ID said "94.7 (noventa y cuatro punto siete)Cadena Cien, ciudad de Cordoba." Seemingly, the station broadcasts with some FM repeaters in the country, but it is necessary to make more check on the station if it is audible again via shortwave feeder. No puedes ayudarme GIB? (TIN)

11710.13, R.Nacional via RAE;Buenos Aires, Oct 5, 2028-2111, Soccer game relay. 35433 good signal. Also Oct 8, 2100, German prgm. openning mx and ID "Hier ist die RAE, R.A.E., Radiodifuson Argentina al Exterior..." at 2102. 35333. According to DXWin 82 by Barrera, it scheduled on 15345kHz, but heard on
11710kHz. (Kanai)

CAMEROON

3970v, CRTV Buea, Oct 10, 2200, after more than a year, the mysterious African
has been identified! Positively //4850 with presumed relay from Yaounde; carrier strong as usual, though audio badly distorted. This must be a new transmitter, as the signal is consistently way too strong for listed 4 kw.  (Hill)

4850, CRTV, Oct 7, 2000-2400*, t/in French, mostly French annts (perhaps a few words of English), music through 24 UT s/off without any announcement, but full NA (matched with NA on Microsoft Bookshelf CD). Taped across top of hours but no decent ID heard. Signal best 21, 22, dropping a bit after 23. Interestingly, bubble jammer noted equal to CRTV at t/in 20 UT, seemed to disappear by 2030; no idea what that is about. Probable Uzbek Radio (IS heard 0030) took over 4850 after CRTV carrier drop, just above noise level, not as strong as AIR running s6 on 5010 to 0030. (Sundstrom Oct 7) Bubble jammer is chasing the Voice of Mojahed which is (unfortunately) inside band and jumping between 4830-4890 at present, ed.

4850, Cameroon RTV; Yaounde, Oct 11, 0455-0508, A bit of local reggae called ''Fly away with me'', followed by announcement in English, also ID in English: ''This is the CRTV National Station''. COLOMBIA

4955, R dif Nacional de Colombia, carries some prgrs specially intended for listeners abroad, news headlines etc. around 0130. Humming carrier makes listening un-comfortable.

6064.5, Colmundo Bogotá is on this fqy since Sept 20 on a somewhat irregular sked; seems genuinely interested in sw, as C.E., Vicente Echeverry, reported back to hq that the sw signal was coming in loud and clear in the town of Pereira, where he was on a corporate business trip.

6115.2, La V del Llano takes Super network news every half hour. On Oct 10, 2315, ranchera "Tu maldito amor", as interpreted by Dr. Henry Pava Camelo, who is crippled (confined to a wheel-chair)and general manager of R Super PAM network.

CZECH REPUBLIC

After several more czechs I finally got the entire announcement from R. Prague I mentioned previously, Oct 6 at 1306 on 13580. Said that as far as they knew, the
English and Czech services would continue next year, but they were worried about German, French and Spanish as the Minister of Foreign Affairs has said they would be discontinued. Listeners who would like to express their solidarity with Radio Prague broadcasters and listeners in these languages were asked to write by Oct. 15 to the MFA ( Hauser, OK)

Absolutely rock-solid, with hardly any flutter, and possibly the strongest Indo I've ever heard, even when DXing from California! Still pounding in with warta berita when rechecked just after 1000. Next day, with geomag storm in progress, was weak and barely readable at the same hour. (Hill)

KAZAKHSTAN

Radio Kazakhstan verified a reception report on their home service frequency 11950 kHz with a QSL card of the German section. So this is definitely a chance to get an authentic confirmation. The German foreign service seems to be relayed via Ukraine only, and the German home service transmissions are apparently - as reported earlier - no longer on short wave. My report was on a Russian programme, written in German. (Buschau) seems a good way to QSL this, ed.

KIRIBATI

Referring to the comments in last week's DXW, it's true that the shortwave service was originally set up as a feeder to Kiritimati (a.k.a. Christmas Island) when a mediumwave transmitter was set up there. That MW transmitter operated on 1115kHz, later co-channel with the main MW transmitter on 846kHz. However, the Kiritimati transmitter broke down, and it was decided that since some of the inhabitants had shortwave receivers, the "feeder" would be kept on the air as a de facto broadcasting service. For that reason, it ceased to be a feeder because there was nothing for it to feed! If the mediumwave transmitter, or some other transmitter, has subsequently come back on the air, nobody has told us - and since it would probably be on the same frequency as the main one, DXers would not be aware of its existence. As far as the suggestion to check the Internet is concerned, I've done that many, many times....and so far found nothing.

WRTH may be "inconsistent" because DXers are themselves sometimes inconsistent in defining what constitutes a broadcast service. You only have to look at the different guidelines used by various DX organizations to know that. We do not, as a rule, publish details of transmitters that are not intended for reception by the general public. In this case, I decided that since Radio Kiribati itself has stated that the transmission on SW was a "broadcast" then we should list it.  If the Broadcasting Service of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia starts listing its SSB feeders in its official transmission schedule, then I will list those as well. But it doesn't - so I don't :-) (Sennitt)

I received at verification from Radio Senlandlimoj, verifying that they DID broadcast from Liechtenstein! I now wonder whether this is my country No. 211 verified - or not? I.e. can a pirate station represent a new country? What do DX-W readers think? Olle Alm says this is a hobby pirate. But then many of the small Peruvian and Bolivian stations should be considered pirates, too? It would be fun to hear other points of view as well (BEFF)

Another two provincial radio stations will close down this week due
to financial problems, pushing the troubled National Broadcasting
Corporation [NBC] further into turmoil. Radio West New Britain is
reported to have wound up its services last night, while Radio North
Solomons, based in Buka [island north of Bougainville, seat of the
local administration] was reported by the NBC's regional office in
Vunadidir, East New Britain, to be preparing its last broadcast for
tonight [2nd October] before closing down tomorrow.

Only Radio East New Britain and Radio Manus are continuing to operate
due to sound financial help from their provincial governments. Radio
New Ireland closed down about two months ago after running out of
money and no attempts have been made to reopen it.

NBC's regional coordinator, Aloisius Rumina, said yesterday that
funding for the stations, which was supposed to be channelled through
the provincial governments, had not been forthcoming as expected. He
said the stations were closing down or had closed down because the
provincial governments were not giving them the allocated funds. Mr
Rumina said in the case of Buka, the provincial station had
originally budgeted for more than 100,000 kina, but were only
allocated 30,000 kina, which it has exhausted. New Ireland had last
year budgeted for 120,000 kina but only received 20,000, leading to
its premature closure soon after the elections.

Radio West New Britain closed after the studio became flooded from
leaky roofing at the weekend [27th-28th September]. (`Papua New Guinea Post-Courier' web site, Port Moresby, 2 Oct via BBCM)

The shortwave relay used to be scheduled from 2300-2345, so perhaps they reduced transmission time by 15 minutes. Fair. Also heard on 10/10 from around 2305 UTC. Nothing heard on 11 October (Sunday). POLAND/BELARUS

Belarus independent broadcaster Radio 101.2 has set up a cooperation with the Belarussian Service of Polish Radio.

>>We broadcast half an hour daily producing news, reports, commentaries and programmes. At the moment we are in a very tricky situation when we can not fully announce and use Radio 101.2 name because the Board of Directors of the Polish Radio has a number of objections to that project. Mainly they are afraid of the possible reaction from the Belarussian Authorities. At the same time the head of the 5th Programme of the Polish Radio Mr. J.M. Novakovski is the one who supports the project.

The Belarusian Service of the Polish Radio has become the only channel for Radio 101.2 to reach the listeners in Belarus and Europe. In the situation of the total information blockade of Belarus this project is more than important not only for the Radio itself but also for our listeners and people of Belarus. Now they have a chance to receive full objective information in Belarussian language.<< (Kuhl via AMARC)

Tamil Service of SLBC is using 6035 1300-1400 //5020 kHz. 6035 had been used by the TWR to India and then for a Tamil propaganda broadcast after TWR left it, and now by SLBC.  The antenna is a low strung dipole about 30 feet off the ground f0r almost vertical take off. Its on a mashy ground close to the sea and sometimes at high tide its like in a lagoon. This transmitter is a Marconi 12.5 kW which was imported to jam Tamil Tiger broadcasts, which finally came into the hands of TWR which refurbished it and was allowed to use it for some time.  Since the TWR wasn't sure how long they would be able to use the TX the antenna was a make shift, strung on ex telegraph wooden poles and the 200 meter long open wire feeders were strung on wooden poled about 7 feet off the ground, using PVC water pipe type home brew insulators. Well that's what you are hearing! Puts in a good signal here.

In the meantime the SLBC inaugurated a MW station on 855 kHz said to be 5kW State of the art! operation built by TCI and Marconi/ A twin tower affair, one acting as a reflector.  This is located in the North Central Town of Vavunia and broadcasts to the North and the East in Tamil, the heartland of the war ravaged part of the island.  Signals are excellent as reported in South India and the North and the East of Sri Lanka, while here in Colombo I can barely hear it, indicating that it is doing what it is supposed to do. Signals are overall S-4 while TWR 400kW on 882 gets a 5. The sked is 2300-1600 UTC. The Station identifies as "Vanam Padhi" which is the name of a bird. No mention os SLBC or Sri Lanka. The only indication are the time checks and postal address which is the same as SLBC. (Goonetilleke/UADX)

Just before WOR 912 broadcast, Oct 7 at 0400 on 5085-USB, Dave Frantz on WGTG announced that their second transmitter would begin testing in a few weeks. I understand he plans to use more tropical-band frequencies near to WWCR. He's looking for new customers and offers low, low rates (Hauser) now that they would be illegally broadcasting anyway what does it take to convince them NOT to broadcast within the tropical bands? What a disaster. Is it really not possible to get WWCR/WGTG stopped in the tropical band range? ed.

On Oct 8, at 2005 t/in the bubble jammer was atop Cameroon (in French), but faded down quickly.  And at 2030 we heard Cameroon, the bubble jammer and - surprise! - the Uzbek Radio IS, the latter underneath the other two signals. CLANDESTINE STATIONS

CHINA

15388.04, New Star Broadcasting, Oct 7, 0800-0805, usual IS and opening as "Di-er tai" or second program. 23332 - Surprise, surprise!!!! They are still active. What I mean is New Star Broadcasting. With my new NRD-525 I started digging for this station again and was surprised to hear them on 15388 kHz again for the first time in five years. This is probably due the selectivity of the NRD and the fact that CNR 1 on 15390 kHz shuts up on Tuesdays from around 6-9 UTC. For fellow nit-pickers: the other noted frequencies were 8300.01 kHz, 9725.00 kHz and 11429.99 kHz. The fact that - except 15388 kHz - all channels are good on frequency must mean good, stable transmitters (Taiwan?). Also here in at my location this station has quite unstable reception. One day it's booming in, the other hardly audible. If -and it's a big IF - these signals are coming from the nearest shortwave site (30 km), then could this be explained? (Boogert)

COMMENT TO 4460 CPBS-1 INTERFERENCE

Number station Pijpers heard interfering was indeed Mossad, it is on 4463 khz in am mode and uses three letter id, among others ftj. Sometimes the id is followed by the no. 2, for example ftj2. That means that there will be no traffic to follow and presumedly tells the agent that he had tuned to the right frequency and that he had not missed the broadcast. - btw, there is a good mailing list for all those interested in number stations: spook. - Just send an email to
majordomo@qth.net with just subscribe subscribe@+ your e-mail address (Ruessler)

Nice response from Andy Sennit below re. Ralph Famularo comments in DXW84 editorial: >I have been wondering about the continual decrease in 60mb Africans< says Ralph Famularo. >Does anyone know the status of such countries as Cameroon, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and more recently, the Central African Republic on 5033v -- are any of these guys planning to return?  It's quite depressing to see one after another of the African nations disappearing from the bands. Is satellite a viable alternative in Africa? Will the average African be able to afford satellite receiving technology? It seems that someone with $$$ or technical know-how should be helping these nations with their communications infrastructure.<
Andy writes: There are two separate issues here. First, shortwave. It's true that there are less transmitters on the air in Africa than there used to be, but this is mainly due to the age of the equipment. Many of the African nations are
using equipment that has been there for decades. Spares are often hard to obtain, and even when they are available the money to purchase them may not be. New transmitters are prohibitively expensive for a poor African nation, so many do indeed depend on donations and technical assistance from the richer nations. Unfortunately, the nature of African politics means that there is often no great desire on the part of western nations to subsidise the state-controlled media, even when humanitarian aid is freely given.

Regarding satellites, no of course individual Africans are not expected to go out and buy a satellite receiver. A few weeks ago, Belgian TV carried a quite moving documentary about a guy in Tambacounda, Senegal who loves watching TV, but signals from state-run TV are spasmodic, and the cost of satellite TV is too high. So he had the idea of asking all the people in his village to make a contribution. He went to Dakar - a long journey - to visit Canal Plus Afrique and find out more. It turned out that even with everyone making a contribution, it was still too expensive...so he went back to fiddling with his TV antenna to try to get programmes from state TV.

But WorldSpace is developing a new concept, with radio transmissions aimed at a handheld receiver. I believe they are estimating that 2 million or so of these sets will be initially available - production is shared between several companies - and many of the sets will be purchased by charities and aid agencies and distributed to those who cannot afford to buy them. The list of broadcasters already signed up is impressive - a mixture of African domestic broadcasters, international broadcasters and commercial stations.

This should improve reception to some people, but it is only one part of the
equation. FM networks are theoretically the answer, but in practice prohibitively expensive in a vast, sparsely populated country - and how do you get the audio to the transmitter? Satellite, of course.

Don't be misled into believing that African stations are moving from AM and shortwave to satellite. They're not. They are using satellite as an auxiliary service - with the benefit that the signals will reach the entire continent, important in a region with very few external services.

In the meantime, there are millions of Africans much more frustrated that we DXers are...imagine if you were unable to hear your national radio network. For our 60mb DX is someone else's only contact with their own country (Sennitt)

So, let's start...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Radio San Marino International informed us that they are starting broadcasts on shortwave on Saturday, December 20th. There is a homepage online: http://www.exactweb.com/RSMI/  On that homepage is detailed information available yet. (direct and via Mougenez) but no further details on the web as of Oct 11 (Krone)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The old AWR Asia Web site doesn't exists anymore. They still maintain their pages from Guam, but they now use the following URL: http://www.awr.org/awr-asia/guam/index.htm (AS)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our club member and publisher of the TDP - Transmitter Documentation Project,
Ludo Maes, tells us about updates to his publication:

Here are the details :

1) DIGITAL Shortwave Radio
--------------------------
Shortwave radio broadcasting is moving into the digital age as well. Here you will find information about the proposed systems with technical details and the manufacturers, organisations and radio stations involved in this fascinating evolution which will certainly cause a revival of shortwave radio broadcasting.

2) Shortwave Radio STATIONS
---------------------------
Links to the websites of the radio stations that broadcast on shortwave, sorted in the most comprehensive way possible. Have a look to convince yourself.

3) TDP Shortwave Transmitter MUSEUM
-----------------------------------
We are building up a museum with technical information about shortwave broadcast transmitters that are no longer manufactured today but are still in use at many sites around the world. We have lots of documentation in our archives to include on this page, only time has prevented us right now to extend it more, but be sure to have a look from time to time to find the information you need.

4) TDP SERVICES
---------------
If you are looking for airtime or for a shortwave transmitter, or if you have airtime or a shortwave transmitter for sale, be sure to visit our "TDP Shortwave Transmitter AIRTIME" and "TDP Shortwave Transmitter MARKETPLACE" services.

5) The MANUFACTURERS Pages
--------------------------
If you want to consult the website of a shortwave ANTENNA, TRANSMITTER for TUBE manufacturer, here you will find the links, addresses, telephone and fax numbers.

Disney/ABC Radio To Put Top 25 Radio Stations Online

Source: Newsbytes

TOKYO, JAPAN, Newsbytes via Individual Inc.: The Disney/ABC Radio Group has
announced it will soon be putting its top 25 radio stations live on the Internet. The network will be making 22 FM stations and three AM stations available via a new Web site called Audio Lounge.

The Audio Lounge service, available at http://www.audiolounge.com , uses the
Microsoft NetShow 2.0 streaming audio format to broadcast the stations. This
is different to the RealAudio format which the majority of live audio services
currently use but, thanks to its inclusion in Microsoft Web browsers and
support from others, it is fast gaining acceptance as the second major Web
broadcasting format.

Full service is expected to begin shortly although some stations, including
New York's WABC-AM, is already broadcasting live.

The Disney/ABC Group FM stations that have signed up for the new service are
KABC, KLOS, KTZN, Y-107 (New York and Los Angeles), KBAY, KFUX, KSJO, KCXX, WKHY, WYAY, KFBQ, WJR, WPLT, KQRS, KEGE, KREV, WPLJ, WCLV, WCSB, WMJI, EDGE, and KZPS. AM stations are WLS, WMVP, and WABC.

(19971002/Reported By Newsbytes News Network: http://www.newsbytes.com via AS)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lubos Rendek compiles a list of broadcasts in the Czech and Slovak languages.
The address to go to is http://members.tripod.com/~lrendek/index-2.html

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Digital Radio Mondiale is a world consortium dedicated to forming a single
world standard for digital broadcasting in the AM radio bands below 30 MHz.
Its members are broadcasters, network operators, manufacturers, and standards
and regulatory organizations. The homepage is located at http://www.drm.org/
There is also a link with a fuller explanation of what Radio Netherlands is

ABOUT DX-WINDOW
####################

Contributions:
Submit to editor for the coming issue, mentioned in the introduction.

What to/how to contribute:
We are interested in real DX-loggings, full information on new or future stations, news like new times or frequencies, QSL- and station information on home service stations/"rare" DX-stations on shortwave only. In the ODDS AND ENDS section, selected comments, short articles of HOT character will be passed.

Our aim is to spread hot and up-to-date dx-information amongst our members. And to get to know each other better. Other loggings, articles of a non-outdating character, QSL-information etc. should be sent to ShortWaveNews as usual. The editor is free to "cut hard" and bring only the hottest items he receives.

These following rules apply:

The DX-Window will be sent via e-mail to those members of the Danish Shortwave Club International (DSWCI) who contribute regularly. If you find that you have been put "off the list" and miss the DX-Window, just send us your hottest contributions. Or find the "DX Window" a few days later on World Wide Web in the DSWCI section of the "Nordic Shortwave Center" on
http://swl.sds.se/

You will also find back issues on the web. All this is offered free of charge to any DX-er, but we expect that regular visitors to our WWW-page do so in the spirit of Shareware and join the DSWCI. You will then as a member receive our monthly bulletin SHORTWAVE NEWS which also contains a lot of other information of value for the active DX-er.
