1997-03-10 R Altura 6479.8 0112 Good s7 signal. Rapid fire speech, difficult to pick out IDs. Had been trying for more than a week on this one. At this time of the year the grayline is perfectly placed, and the signal peaks s9+ at sunset, drops in level about an hour later, then picks up again early evening. (Sundstrom Mar 10) Cumbre 129

1996-10-02 Radio Altura 6480 0403-0436 very strong signal, Peruvian music with announcements by one or two announcers. Many IDs, time checks and messages (which they called "comunicados") for listeners in the Departamentos of Cajamarca and San Martin. Two recorded reverb IDs were more difficult. One, at 0423, began with "Huarmaca" and ended with "...de nuestro Pueblo y...rica historia...aqui transmite Radio Altura, onda corta, para el pais y el mundo." The second recorded ID, immediately before sign-off, included the following words: "Desde la sierra norte del Peru...hasta las selva tropical...transmite Radio Altura...." After time announcement at 0430, long sign off announcement including mention of the date and "senoras, senores, amigos, amigas...gracias por...su preferencia...felices suenos...muy buenas noches" followed by the above-quoted recorded reverb ID and a hymn or march which was NOT the Peruvian National Anthem. Further comment on 6479.84 from Pedro F. Arrunategui: I believe that those who have hrd R. Los Andes on this fqy are correct, because I also hrd that on June 13. I have also hrd it at s/off on 7143.2. -- It must be remembered that, in Peru, many stns take to the air informally, without a defined fqy and without permission, some even with made-up call letters. Some disappear after a short time. An example is R. Altura. They use different fqys, and sometimes they have anncd as R. Los Andes, other times as R. Altura. This is partly to mislead the authorities. You may think I have many QSLs from Peru, but that is not true. It is easier to obtain them from abroad. The very few that answer me are the ones with their license applications pending, or who have a temporary permit; the rest do not answer because they think I may be with the Telecommunications Ministry. -- My "QSL" comes from other DXers hearing the same stn. So it is not surprising that Henrik Klemetz writes, "I listened to R. Los Andes and/or Altura." It depends on the anncr at the time. There is also a R. Altura on 3339.9, Cerro de Pasco, and if that one is official it means that there are two SW stns with the same name. As we know from TIN's reports, even equipment is moved from one region to other. Much of the radio scene in the interior of Peru is driven by people who enjoy using radio, but often without crystals. That is why they say they are on one fqy but are actually on another. -- DX should not be mainly a competition, but rather a sharing of what is heard. Just because I live in Peru does not mean that I will hear a stn first. Another who lives far away may be the first. What is nice about DX is seeking and finding it, and thereafter verifying, knowing that it is all likely to change before long. (Arrunategui-Peru, Chasqui DX, for ease reasons (I just came back from Greece, you remember, hi) as edited by JBerg in NU)

1996-08-24 Radio Altura 6479.8 0125-0246 Stronger as time went on. Several ID's for Altura, non whatsoever for Radio Los Andes, as reported by many earlier. This may not be as strange as it seems, as station apparently is in close cooperation with earlier reported Radio Altura on 7143 kHz - it may even be the same station. As reported by Henrik Klemetz in May '96, when both stations first were noted, even the local DJ's get confused. In a first test transmission on May 9 the locutor made "wrong" announcements several times such as, according to Klemetz, "Radio Al... Los Andes" and "Thank you for prefering Radio Altura, no, Radio Los Andes it is". On Aug 24 transmission about important ruins near Huarmaca. (Pedersen, Aug 24) DXWin 28

1996-03-09 Radio Altura 7143 2340 with musical requests for an elderly gent, walking around with a beer in one hand and a transistor radio tuned to Radio Altura in the other! Announcer said they were operating from new studios at Antonio Raymondi 312 or 302. The previous address was "next to the Huarmaca electricity plant". Hopefully the new address will work out better for DX reporters! (Klemetz Dateline Bogota Mar 9) Cumbre 79

1995-12-19 Radio Altura 7143.04 1418 w/Ecuadorian folk music, TC, greetings and dedications. Many mentions of them being in the "distrito de Huarmaca." No actual "Radio Altura" ID heard, but it's definitely the R.Altura announcer and it's in Huarmaca. Moved from 5956.7 kHz, where Harald Kuhl discovered them in Nov. Last summer they were on about 7559 kHz. Dec.17. Also heard on the 19th at about 1725 UTC. (McVicar) Cumbre 66

1995-07-16 Radio Altura 7559.4 2011 Various types of pop and folk music w/ TCs and IDs giving their location. At 2032 UTC, an interesting "saludo" where they greeted all brothers in Christ in the evangelical churches in the area. 20:38-"Son las 3 de las tarde, 41 minutos en los estudios de Radio Altura, que transmite desde Huarmaca en la provincia de Huancabamba en la Republica del Peru." Signals were very good throughout the rest of the afternoon on July 16. When I checked the frequency later in the evening, at 0044 UTC, signals were excellent. That greeting to "our brothers in Christ" points to the station being operated by an evangelical group. I've asked around HCJB in hopes that someone could give me an address of an evangelical church in Huarmaca but learn we have no contacts in that area of Peru. (McVicar) Jihad 41
