info A new shortwave station is projected to take to the air in Peru some time in the early part of next year. It will be located at Juliaca and it will be on the air with programming in Spanish and Quechua. A couple of years ago, a 5 kW transmitter located at Alajuela in Costa Rica left the air with a flourish. A special endorsement was affixed to QSL cards for the final week of broadcasts from AWR-Latin America at the Alajuela transmitting site. This transmitter first went on the air under the callsign TISDA and it was later changed to TIAWR. At the time of the closure, AWR announced that this transmitter would be transferred to Guatemala where it would become a second unit for Union Radio under the callsign TGMU. However, because of the current exigencies in Guatemala, this transmitter went into storage instead, at the Cahuita SW base of AWR-PanAmerica on the Atlantic coast in Costa Rica. The new plan calls for this transmitter to be re-furbished at the Elcor transmitter factory in San Jose. It wil then be shipped to Peru for installation at the new MW station located at the Adventist college at Juliaca, near Lake Titicaca. It is planned that this station will operate in the international SW bands with the antenna beamed towards the south east and with programming mainly in Quechua and Spanish. It will operate under a Peruvian callsign, apparently in the OAX series. Even though this unit is rated at only 5 kW, it will nevertheless be one of the stronger powered SW stations located in Peru. If the project is successful, additional SW transmitters will be installed at this location. In some ways, this new SW facility in Peru will replace the Paraguay project which has not thus far eventuated because of difficulties in transferring international finances from one country to another in South America (Adrian Peterson Radio News Bulletin April 29) Cumbre 84
