weak signal and much trouble from bad local noise. OA NA followed by flutes but announcement too weak to hear, then into LA music until noise became too strong. Heard briefly again on Sept. 6 at 1116 with clear TC but no ID. (Lazarus) |

talk by man until 2355 when there was salsa type music. 0000 little chimes and time check twice by man. Closing announcements with about 5 ids over the next minute. Off at 0001 without an anthem. (Johnson Nov 15) R Santiago (Follow up) Still heard at 0040, so the 0000ish sign off I reported last week doesnt happen every night. (Johnson Nov 21) 1111-1123 w/ OM ancr, unusual African-sounding song, ID, then into trop mx. Poor. The reported location for Radio Santiago, 5730, is Puerto Galilea. Per my Peruvian gazeeter, this town is the capital of Rio Santiago Distict, which is part of Condorcanqui Province, which is the northernmost part of Amazonas Department, along the Ecuadorian border. Coordinates for the twon are 04 00 S, 77 48 W. The Santiago River flows through the area. Condorcanqui is a new province; it is not on my 1985 Peruvian map, but is listed in the 1988 gazeeter. Another station, Radio Condorcanqui in the provincial capital of Santa Maria de Nieva is listed on 4319 in the TBL. This remote region is beginning to look like a jungle "boom" area, at least in terms of radio. (Moore Nov16) |

good; fair, on a noisy fq. This stn is so strong t 0 R Santiago, 1105, good; Nov 5, 2230, fair, on a noisy fq. This stn is so strong that it should be able to put out a readable signal outside of South America. (Klemetz/Dateline Bogota) |

New Peruvian here w/ mx till 2359 on Sept. 15. On Oct. 4 w/ regular pgm 2240 to past 0100, saying they would be on the air until 0200, although regular sked was ancd as 5-9 a.m., 3-8 p.m. During first two hours played the same music tape twice, including chicha group Celeste, from Chiclayo, and a Cuarteto Continental LP. Short IDs plus TC at 2314 and 0005, "Esta transmitiendo R. Santiago". After midnight, another DJ came on the air, announcing every now and then, "Esta es R. Santiago, desde la capital del distrito de Puerto Galilea," mentioning freq as "5730 kHz, banda internacional de 60 metros." Comunicado for a vaccination campaign from the local Centro de Saludo, but no regular commercial ads. Later IDs made it clear that Puerto Galilea is on the shores of the Santiago river, in the Condorcanqui province of Amazonas department. Signal was quite good. Also noted Oct. 5 at 1040 T/I. (Klemetz) 5730.05 at 1025-1055 w/ long echo talk by man in local Indian lang w/ mention of Peru. Then OA campo mx and exotic wind instruments, w/ man hosting in local lang.
