All of us first met during
our time together at the Department of Metal Arts, at the
Konstfack National College of Arts, Craft and Design in Stockholm.
We lacked a forum for discussion about the creative process and jewlery making,
so in 1993, we decided to form a group for this purpose, called Orn O.
The Orn O group's original goal was to present unique forms of jewlery that
are not made for commercial purposes. What mainly interests us is the creative
expression in each piece of jewlery, and also the way people react while viewing
them.
In 1995 we had our first non-commercial exhibition at Kulturhuset in Stockholm.
We decided not to use traditional showcases, because we wanted an environment
where the audience could closely observe and touch the objects. The presentation
included music and dancers, in an attempt to make the viewing of jewelry a
slightly unusual experience. The same jewelry collection was later shown
at the Gallery Nord in Örebro, which usually exhibit paintings.
The exhibition had its final showing at Sillegården, in Sunne.
In 1998, we chose a different manner to exhibit twenty-five pieces of jewelry.
Each object was worn
by someone employed in a public environment, during his or her working hours.
These were people working at places like Systembolaget, public libraries,
and ticket agencies.
We documented the whole process by photographing the participants wearing
our jewelry in there working place, and we also gave each "exhibitor"
a questionnaire to fill out, to find out there reactions to taking part in
the project.
Since forming the Orn O group, its most important function has been as a platform
for experimentation and discussion, on various topics concerning the jewelry-art.
During 1999 we decided to widen the focus of our debate further, to include
an evening of discussion between invited
jewelry-artists, and also through planning our own web site.
